How Socialbytes and LEPRA Society Co-created Tools to Support Patients, Caregivers, and Frontline Health Workers
The Challenge
How do you ensure that patients fighting leprosy and lymphatic filariasis not only begin treatment — but stay with it, learn from it, and complete it?
That’s the challenge LEPRA Society brought to us — one deeply rooted in health equity, patient engagement, and the power of information.
Across India’s 143 districts, LEPRA has been working to restore dignity, inclusion, and health for thousands of people affected by neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). But like many large-scale health programs, the process relied heavily on manual data entry, paper-based tracking, and limited follow-up mechanisms.
This made it difficult to track treatment adherence, monitor disabilities, and provide timely health education to both patients and field workers.
The Approach: Tech for Better Health
Together, LEPRA Society and Socialbytes co-created two digital platforms designed to make patient care smarter, connected, and more efficient — while keeping field realities at the center.
1. Digital Adherence Tracking System (DATS)
A mobile application to monitor treatment adherence and morbidity management for patients of leprosy and lymphatic filariasis. It captures care for ulcers, physiotherapy, footwear, aids, appliances, and disability prevention — all through simple check-ins and real-time dashboards.
2. Digital Learning System (DLS)
A learning app built on Nikusht 2.0 (the national patient management platform under NLEP) that trains health staff on:
- Basics of Leprosy
- Nikusht Data Entry
- Monthly Progress Reporting
It enables accurate data entry, better reporting, and stronger patient care — directly supporting the National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP).
Both systems were designed to be offline-first, multilingual, and scalable — fit for the field, and future-ready for integrations across states.
Key Features
- Android and web interfaces for frontline staff
- Patient education modules with chapters, quizzes, and FAQs
- Adherence logs and dashboards with role-based access
- Reporting powered by Apache Superset
- Data import capabilities and real-time monitoring
The Impact
DATS in Numbers
- 4,537 patients diagnosed and tracked
- 3,579 patients traced in communities
- 913 patients supported for complications
- 1,160 patients provided aids and appliances
- 139 patients supported with rehabilitation
DLS in Numbers (Since March 2024)
- 131 medical staff trained
- 340 paramedical staff engaged
- 82 caregivers and community members reached
- Continuous tracking of learning progress
Every dashboard, every log, every module now translates into healthier outcomes, stronger communities, and restored lives.

Why This Matters
Technology, when built with empathy and intent, can bridge gaps in access and equity.
With LEPRA Society, we took one step closer to making that a reality — showing how thoughtfully designed systems can bring data, care, and human stories together to drive lasting change.
